Haunted House

Haunted House

State Standard: 1, 3, & 4

Equipment: Several Beanbags, Buckets, Cones, and pool noodles (tag sticks) Grade: K-5
Purpose of Event: Work on Listening skills, directions, strategy, lots of movement
Time: 20-25 minutes
Set-up:
Big circle of cones around the gym – the haunted house walls. Place all your bean bags in the middle of the circle – candy. Put Hula hoops by the walls of the gym – candy buckets2 people at each station. Pick four students to be  taggers in the middle of the haunted house (ghosts). Taggers can’t leave house area. The other students are trying to steal the candy from the haunted house. Description:
Try to enter the haunted house  and steal 1 piece of candy without being tagged by a ghosts. If a student gets tagged, they put candy back and go back and tag their partner.  (For 3-5 classes I have them perform an exercise before they attempt to steal again). For K-1 students, they go back to bucket and do jumping jacks or whatever at their buckets.Modifications:
You may only tag your partner, and nobody else. Once you have decided to run to the West or East, you may not change your mind.  Get back to the line as soon as you get to the base line, or are tagged.
Concerns: Being safe while tagging. Making sure students are staying in their order. For the older kids: No cheating!!!!

Space Ship Tag

Space Ship Tag

State Standard: 1, 2, & 4

Equipment:   9 planets (picture) 10 cones, Alien/space ship (picture)2-3 foam noodles (tagging), music (star wars theme would be great!) Grade: K-2
Purpose of Event: Movement in general space, learning planet names and locations
Time: 10-15 minutes
Description:

Put one cone in the middle of the gym and attach the picture of the space ship/alien to it.  Place the other 9 cones out around the gym in orbit, placing one planet picture on each cone (make sure they are in order).

Choose 2-3 students to be Aliens (taggers)  when the music starts, have the Aliens try and touch the students.  Students (Astronauts) move around the gym from planet to planet.  When they are on a  planet they are “safe”  but may only stay on a planet for the count of 3, I have them say the name of the planet when they count (ie. Earth 1,  Earth 2, Earth 3)  Once the 3 seconds are up, they must go to a new planet.

If an Astronauts is touched by and Alien, they must go to the space ship in the middle of the gym.  An Astronaut that is not “tagged” gives them a high “ten” and says “BEAM ME UP” and they are both free to roam the galaxy again!

Switch Aliens often!

Concerns: Moving safe in general space, tag safely. I use pool noodles as tag sticks.

Rudolph’s Treasure

Rudolph’s Treasure

State Standard: 1, 3, & 4

Equipment: 10 scooters, 2-3 colored jerseys, 10 medium cones, 4-6 large cones, 30-40 beanbags, & 2 laundry baskets
Grade: K-2
Purpose of Event: Team Strategy and Muscular Endurance
Time: 20-25 minutes
Organization:
Place 10 scooters on one end of the gym evenly spaced out (Scooters should be upside down when they are not being used).  Place 2 scooters upside down in the middle of the gym, with a colored jersey on each scooter.  Place the medium cones on the sidelines of the gym leaving 10-12 feet between the cones and the sidewalls.  Place 4-6 large cones at the opposite end of the gym approximately 20 feet from the end wall.  Space all the cones out evenly.  Place the beanbag box at the opposite end of the gym and an empty box behind the starting area.  Pair students with a partner and have them sit behind a scooter. Choose two students to use the scooter in the middle.

Description:
The object of the activity is for the students (reindeer) to lie down on their tummies on the scooters (sleighs) and make it across the North Pole (the gym) to the opposite side of the gym to get one beanbag (treasure) without being tagged by the two taggers roaming in the middle of the gym (the Grinches).  The reindeer are safe while they are in the “barn” (at their start spot) and they are safe if they make it to the big cones (opposite side).  But once, they are in between the start area and the big cones, the two Grinches can try to tag them.  The Grinches are also moving around on their tummies and they are not allowed to get off their scooter.  If a student is tagged before making it to the treasure, they simply stand up, pick up their sleigh and walk to the sidelines (where the medium cones are placed) and then they give the scooter to the partner who then has a turn.

If the students make it to the treasure, they must return it to the “barn” without being tagged.  If they are tagged, they simply drop the beanbag where they were tagged and walk to the sidelines and return to their partner.  The partner, or any other student can then decide to try to make it all the way to the opposite end of the gym, or they can choose to rescue a dropped beanbag (treasure).  This is where strategy and teamwork come into place as one or more students can “sacrifice” themselves or distract the Grinch while others make it safely back.

Concerns: Moving safely in the gym. Making sure students are tagging one another is safe manner.

Santa’s Workshop

Santa’s Workshop

State Standard: 1, 3, & 4

Equipment: Several yarnballs, stuffed animals, and/or beanbags, 2 large mats, 2 laundry baskets, several noodles, poly spots, and jersey’s.
Grade: 3-5
Purpose of Event: To practice chasing, fleeing and dodging skills, team strategy, and having fun while participating in an aerobic activity.
Time: 20-25 minutes
Organization:
Place several poly spots down the center line to separate the gym into two halves. Place one mat on one side of the gym and the other mat on the other side. Place a laundry basket on one side and the other laundry basket on the other. Put about 15 items in each laundry basket to represent the toys.

Description:
Divide class into two teams. Tell the class Santa’s elves have gone on strike and that they are no longer making toys for Santa. This means each team must try to obtain all the toys from the other team. Each player must attempt to steal a (one at a time) toy from the other team without getting tagged. Once a player has crossed the center-line into the other team’s area they are eligible to get tagged. I use foam noodles as tag sticks. If a player, gets tagged before they return to their team’ side with or without a toy they MUST go to jail (marked by a mat). A player is able to get out of jail when one of their teammates successfully reaches them and give them a high-five (without getting tagged). I allow them to have free back. However, they MUST return to their team’s side before they try to steal a toy again.  The game is over once one team has successfully obtained all the toy’s from the other team.

Rules:
Students are NOT allowed to take more than one toy per trip. They are NOT allowed to throw the toy’s to a teammate. They must run to their side. Students cannot attempt to tag an opponent while trying to steal a toy at the same time.

Variations:
You can have the students get a free back if they successfully reach the opponents laundry basket and grab a toy before being tagged; instead of trying to make it back safely before or after they try to steal a toy.

Concerns: Moving safely in the gym. Making sure students are tagging one another is safe manner. Reinforce to the students how to problem solve if they think they tagged an opponent who thinks they are safe.

Catch A Thief

Catch A Thief

State Standard: 1, 3, & 4

Equipment: 12 bean bags (6 for each team) Jersey for half the students
Grade: K-3
Purpose of Event: Cardiovascular, Sportsmanship, Honesty, & Character Development
Time: 5-10 minutes
Description:

Divide the students into 2 teams, each team having half of the playing area; one team wears jerseys. Place 6 bean bags on the back line of each side. Players try to sneak over to the other teams side and steal their bean bags. Players who carry one bean bag back to their side add it to their teams pile of bean bags. A player who is tagged on the opponents’ side of the gym must go to Jumping Jack Jail (a circle I have on the side of my gym). Once in jail they do 5 jumping jacks and return to the activity.

Variations: Can place bean bags inside basketball lane and have that be the “goalie area” you may not be in your own teams goal area. -OR- Assign each team their own jail and a teammate may rescue a prisoner by going into jail, taking the prisoner’s hand, and running the prisoner back to their side of the playing area. If the rescuer and prisoner are tagged, they both become prisoners. Only one prisoner may be rescued at a time.

Concerns: Move safely in general space.

Traffic Light Tag

Traffic Light Tag

State Standard: 1 & 3

Equipment: 6 balls, or anything safe to tag with) 2 red, 2 yellow, 2 green; music
Grade: K-2
Purpose of Event: Move at different tempos
Time: 5-10 minutes
Description:

Ask students if they’ve seen  traffic light …what colors are on the light?  What do each of the colors mean for cars?  Let students know that they will have have to “be like” cars today and remember that red=stop, green = go/fast speed, and yellow = slow speed.  Demonstrate each of the “speeds”.  Hold up a ball and have students move the body part you call out with the speed represented by the color ball. Then, have the students move through general space using the speed you call out.  When you feel they have the concept down, and can safely move through general space, go on to the next part.

Explain that 6 students will have have one ball.  When the music starts, those students will keep holding onto the ball and touch someone with the ball.  When tagged, that student must then move at the speed associated with the color ball that tagged them. (Demo)  For example, if tagged with a yellow ball, the student will move in a slow speed.  If they are tagged with a red ball, they must “stop” and freeze until tagged by a yellow or green ball.  After playing about 30 seconds to a minute, switch the balls around to other students so everyone gets a chance to hold a ball and be a tagger.

Concerns: Make sure they can move safely in general space, tag softly (I like using pool noodle for this!)

Bake Shop

Bake Shop

State Standard1, 2, & 4

Equipment 5 Mats, several yarnballs, and noodles Grade: K-3
Purpose of Event: Cardiovascular Endurance, Spatial Awarness, & Control.
Time: 15-20 minutes
Organization: Set up 5 mats like 5 on a dice in the gym.

Description: Put the students into 5 teams. One team is the middle of the gym on a mat they are the bakers (taggers). The 4 other teams are running and trying to steal the cookies (yarnball) and put them on their mats. After several minutes switch the bakers (taggers).

Variations: Instead, of just running have the students try different locomotor skills (i.e., skipping and/or galloping) while trying to attempt to steal the “cookies.”

Concerns: Move safely around the gym. Being safe the hockey sticks!!!!

Turkey Round Up

PE_Wordle

Turkey Round Up

State Standard: 1, 2, 3, 4

Equipment: 4 hoops, 5 jerseys, 7-8 cones, 8 carpet squares, 5 noodles Grade: K-1
Purpose of Event: Warm up; tagging, fleeing, dodging
Time: 10- 15 minutes
Description:

Tell the students that they will be Turkeys or Farmers, and both are very hungry! Select 5 students to be Farmers. They will wear a Bib (Jersey) so the Turkeys know who they are. The rest of the students are Turkeys, and the game will start with them inside the Turkey Pen (large area marked by cones). It is the job of the Farmers to protect the Turkey Feed (bean bags) in hoops in four corners of the gym. The Turkeys are hungry, so they are going to attempt to leave the Turkey Pen, steal some turkey feed, and make it back to the pen without getting tagged by the Farmer. Farmers are not allowed to enter the Turkey Pen. If the Farmers tag a Turkey, the Turkey must go to the dinner table and stand on a place mat (carpet squares around the outside of the playing area). To escape the Dinner Table, the Turkey must jump up and down and say “gobble, gobble, gobble” until another Turkey sneaks out of the pen, grabs them, and takes them back to the pen. The game ends when all the Turkey feed has been stolen or 1-2 minutes to switch Farmers.

I give the 5 farmers noodles so tagging is safer.

Concerns: Move safely in general space. Tag carefully!!!

Valentine Rescue

20151116-210432-2dkhle1.jpg

Valentine Rescue

State Standard: 1, 3
Equipment: 6-8 poly spots/bases; 2 jerseys, 25+ Bean Bags;  3 Hula Hoop; One pool noodle (arrow) Grade: 3-5, possibly K-5
Purpose of Event: Running, Locomotor Skills, Personal/General Space, Cardiovascular
Time: 10-15 minutes
Description: Spread the poly spots around playing area (rectangle).  One side of the rectangle will have the 2 hula hoops (empty chocolate boxes) opposite that will be the other hula hoop (One as Cupids Base, the other two for the taggers). The third side will have all the bean bags and the side opposite that will have all of the students.  Choose two students to start in a hula hoop as the “Huggers” and the “Kissers” (Hershey’s chocolate kisses).  These two will wear the jerseys.   Then select one student to be “Cupid” and have them stand in a hula hoop.

The object of the game is to see how fast the class can rescue the class can rescue the valentines (bean bags) by avoiding the taggers (Hugs & Kisses).  Start the game by having the students WALK first, adds various locomotor movements later.  You may want to limit running for safety reasons for this game.

If a student is tagged by a hugger or kisser they must go to the empty chocolate box (hula hoops) and if they had a valentine (bean bag) they must return it to the pile of bean bags.  The student may rejoin the game once they are tagged back in by cupid. The only “Safe” zones in this game are the poly spots/bases.  The student may only be on a base for 10 seconds or less and may only use one base for each trip (down and back). Therefore, students may not base hop (go from one base to another and so on).  Only one student per base is allowed.  Also, the taggers cannot “guard” the bases and Cupid may not use the bases as a safety zone.

The game continues until: 1) All of the valentines (bean bags) are rescued or 2) Cupid gets tagged outside of the safety zone (hula hoop).  Don’t forget to switch Cupid and the taggers often.

Concerns: Move safely in General Space
