Sticks & Gladiators
|State Standard: 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5|
|Equipment: Several Foam Pins (taped w/ different colors), 6-7 mats (lying on the floor folded), several gator skin balls, and jerseys||Grade: 3-5|
|Purpose of Event: Demonstrate throwing at a stationary target while students (gladiators) block the ball with a long-handled implement.|
|Time: 15-20 minutes|
Put 6-7 folded mats side-by-side on the middle of the half court line. Next set-up several foam pins (alternating colors) on the mats spaced-out evenly. I put yellow and green tape on my pins to distinguish whose pins are whose.
Students will be throwing a ball at the other team’s colored pins. For instance, team yellow (jerseys) will be throwing their ball at the green pins; while team green (wearing jersey) will be throwing their ball at the yellow pins. They are to be standing between marked lines on the back of the gym. Those students who are the “gladiators” will be using a long-handled implement/racquet to block the ball’s being thrown at the pins. The gladiators are on their own team. I usually let the game go for 2-3 minutes. After the time limit is up; if there is more of one color pin standing up that team wins. Then we rotate “gladiators” and the game begins again. Variations: Have the “gladiators” be on one of the teams who are throwing the ball and protect their teams pins.
Students who are throwing may NOT cross the back baseline when throwing their ball. The gladiators are NOT allowed to touch a ball with their hands! They must only use the racquet.Concerns: Move safely in general space. Being aware of where the students are swinging the racquets. This idea is from:
