Shoot The Gap

State Standard: 1, 3, & 4

Equipment: Several cones, 5-6 foam soccer balls (depending how many teams you have), and several poly spots. 
Grade: 3-6
Purpose of Event: Kicking, Foot/Eye Coordination, Cooperation, dribbling (feet)
Time: 10-15 minutes
Organization:
Spread poly spots all over the gym. Place 5-6 cones in relay formation. Then place several cones on one end of the gym (I put mine just in front a wall) with space in-between them. These will represent the “gaps” the students are trying to kick their ball through. Description:

Divide class into relay teams, on one side of the gym.  The goal is to have students dribble their ball (with their feet) on trap their ball on any one of the poly spots. Once a student has chosen their poly spots and trapped their ball on it they must attempt to kick their ball between the cones (shoot the gap). If, a student scores a goal they pick up their poly spot and go retrieve their ball. After they have retrieved their ball they MUST dribble it back to the next person on their relay team. If, a player attempts a kick while on their desired poly spot and does NOT score (ball in between cones) they cannot pick up their poly spot. The game goes on until all the poly spots are obtained or time runs out. They team with the most poly spots wins. 

Variation: Move the relay teams further back from the location of the poly spots. This would give students more practice on dribbling their soccer ball before they attempt to score. 

Concerns: Keep kicks low, good sportsmanship, and make sure students are NOT using their hands.

Slimeball

Slimeball 

State Standard: 1, 2, 3, 5
Equipment: Cones & Several soft ball (rhinoskin, beach balls) Grade: K-1 (possible 2-5)
Purpose: Kicking Skills, Cooperation, and Spatial Awareness
Time: 15-25 Minutes
Game Description: Pretend the gym is covered with slimballs.  I tell the students they must kick the slimeballs out of their backyard (gym separated by cones in the middle). I tell the students they need to put on their slime proof boots (this allows them to kick the ball). The gym is covered with as many foam balls, gator skin balls or foam soccer balls as possible. On the signal, students begin kicking the slimeballs out of their backyard. Students keep kicking until the instructor blows the whistle. For older grades I play for 2-3 minutes and when the game is stopped if there is more slimeballs in a teams backyard the other team wins.
Concerns: Be Careful when kicking the ball. Make sure students are not running into one another.

Equipment: 1 nerf ball, jerseys  (I use about 6-8 balls for 22 students)
Grade: 4+
Purpose of Event: Kicking, shooting, throwing, Working on Basketball and Soccer skills
Time: 15-20 minutes
Description:

Divide class into 2 teams, and each team stands on their sideline.  Five players from each team go onto the court to start the game.  I start with the ball on the floor in the middle of the gym (if using more than one ball, have them all scattered)  The remaining sideline players are goalies.  Each team has unlimited passing between the sideline and the court. 

Court players cannot pick a ball up off the floor but my use their hands to catch a ball in the air or can convert it by lifting it with the feet and then catching it, only side lines players may pick a ball up off of the floor.  Court players could also kick the ball to a sideline player and have them pick it up and throw it back. Court players can kick the ball any teammate and if it is in the air, they can catch it with their hands.  Once the ball is in the hand, court players may only take 3 steps, then they need to pass, kick or shoot.  Goalies may not move with the ball in their hands.

The object of the game is to score points in the following ways: (Only court players may score!)      throwing the ball through the goalies on the other sideline and hitting the wall (1 point);  kicking the ball through the goalies on the other sideline and hitting the wall (3 points); by shooting the ball through your own basket (1 point). If a basket is scored, the ball is immediately given to the end goalie on the opposite team.

Players remain in the middle for 1-3 minutes and then go to the end of their sidelines, and the other end of their line goes to the court.

Variations: Have 3-4 balls going! 

Concerns: Keep kicking low and under control, don’t add additional balls until they understand game.
