Flicker Ball – Football or Hi-Li or Basketball

Flicker Ball – Football or Hi-Li or Basketball

State Standard: 1 & 3

EquipmentOne football, jerseys Grade: 3+
Purpose of Event: Passing, Catching, Football skills
Time: 15-20 minutes
Description:

Objective: to get the ball into the end zone  (4 teams, 2 half court games)
I pick two kids to rock/paper/scissors to see who gets to start with the ball; the winner picks offense or defense; loser picks side
When holding the ball, you may run (or dribble) until tagged, unless you receive the ball by a turned over, then you can not run
You may not block the thrower
You may block the receiver
If you intercept the pass (catch it in the air)  you may run (or dribble) until tagged
If the pass is dropped , it is a turnover at the spot the ball was dropped
If a team scores, it is handed to the other team they may not run with the ball, until they have completed one pass
If the ball is attempted to be intercepted but the receiver still catches the ball, it is not considered a turn over, play continues

Variations:
-Have boys pass to girls and girls pass to boys, require 3 passes before a score, have 5 people touch the ball before a score,  Have them play other teams every 3-4 minutes switch.

Basketball Style: rule as above, but shooting hoops instead of getting ball to end zone. Can chest or bounce pass.  Once tagged, can continue to dribble (for older students picking up dribble could result in a turn over) If a shot is missed it is a turn over, no rebounding.

Concerns: Touch only or use flags (football style)

3 Person Continuous Football

3 Person Continuous Football

State Standard: 1, 2, & 3

Equipment: Football or rag foot ball for each group of 3 Grade: 3+
Purpose of Event: Throwing, Catching, Running, Adding, throw a football at a moving target
Time: 15-20 minutes
Description:

Cover correct throwing form, catching. and snapping prior to playing.

Line up the groups of 3 across one end of the gym.  (I use the end-line of the basketball court so that we can run and throw farther.)  In each groups one person starts as the Quarter Back (QB), one as the Receiver (R), and one as the Center (C).

The Center starts with the ball and snaps the ball to the Quarter Back (that is standing about 3-4 feet behind the Center) as soon as the Quarter Back says “HUT”.  At this command, the Receiver runs straight out in front of the group.  The Quarter Back then throws the Receiver the ball.   I have my field divided into 3 zones.  The closest zone worth 1 point, the next worth 2 points and the zone farthest away is worth 3 points.  The Quarter Back and Receiver should decide which zone the Receiver should run to.  Each time the Receiver catches the ball it is worth “X” points, depending on which zone the ball is caught in.  I sometimes give points for touching the ball, even if they don’t catch it, so it will encourage them to go after the ball.

After the Receiver has they ball they RUN it back to the group and the Receiver becomes the new Center, the Center moves to Quarter Back and the Quarter Back becomes the new Receiver.  Play continues until one team has reach the point goal.

Goals can be point totals of: 5, 15, 21, what ever works for your class.  Or, keep adding points and if the ball is not caught, loss your points!  Or add points the whole time, and add all of the groups grand total together at the end.

Concerns: Have the Receiver run straight out and back so that they don’t run into anyone, and Run the ball back to the team, don’t throw it.

Pilgrims & Turkey’s

Pilgrims & Turkey’s

State Standard: 1, 2, & 4

Equipment: 24 mini cones; 12 frog /12 lady bug cards or bean bags, music Grade: K-2
Purpose of Event: Move in personal space, locomotor skills, memory skills
Time: 15-20 minutes

Description: (Pilgrim/Turkey cards for a Thanksgiving Theme)

Scatter cones on the gym floor and place a frog or ladybug card (or bean bag) under each cone.  Divide the class in half with one-half as frogs and one-half as ladybugs.  When the music plays, all students will move around the gym and look under the cones for a frog or a lady bug.  the object of the game is to get as many frogs or ladybugs (depending on the team the student is on) from under the cones and placed beside the cones before the music stops.  Students that are “frogs” try to take the ladybugs out from under the cones and students that are “ladybugs” try to take all of the frogs out from under the cones.

If a “ladybug” sees one of their cards next to a cone, they may place the cone back over it.  Once a student places a frog or ladybug outside or under a cone they must run to a different cone-only one person may be at one cone at a time.

When the music stops, all student s must stop and freeze (I use “like a rocket”).  Ask a student who is frozen quietly if they are a frog or ladybug.  If (s)he is a frog ask him/her to go around and place the cones back over all frogs.  Have  student who is  ladybug do the same thing.  Repeat.

You can count and keep score if you want to, I usually don’t.  Also have the students use locomotor skills between cones, not just running.  I only allow my students to touch a cone one time and then they need to move on.  Our goal is to “touch them all”.  Could also use colors under the cones, i.e.. red bean bags and green bean bags.

Concerns: Move safely around the gym.

Turkey Strut A-Z

Turkey Strut A-Z

State Standard: 1, 2, & 4

Equipment: alphabet cards (2 sets) I use a paper punch and cut out turkeys and write the letters on them; 26 hula hoops; Music, basket Grade: K-2
Purpose of Event: Locomotor skills, movement in general space
Time: 15-20 minutes

Description:
Tell the students that they will be Turkeys or Farmers, and both are very hungry! Select 5 students to be Farmers. They will wear a Bib (Jersey) so the Turkeys know who they are. The rest of the students are Turkeys, and the game will start with them inside the Turkey Pen (large area marked by cones). It is the job of the Farmers to protect the Turkey Feed (bean bags) in hoops in four corners of the gym. The Turkeys are hungry, so they are going to attempt to leave the Turkey Pen, steal some turkey feed, and make it back to the pen without getting tagged by the Farmer. Farmers are not allowed to enter the Turkey Pen. If the Farmers tag a Turkey, the Turkey must go to the dinner table and stand on a place mat (carpet squares around the outside of the playing area). To escape the Dinner Table, the Turkey must jump up and down and say “gobble, gobble, gobble” until another Turkey sneaks out of the pen, grabs them, and takes them back to the pen. The game ends when all the Turkey feed has been stolen or 1-2 minutes to switch Farmers.

I give the 5 farmers noodles so tagging is safer.

Concerns: Move safely around the gym.

How to subscribe to a Youtube Channel

The following tutorial is a video I created on how to subscribe to a channel on YouTube. The purpose of this tutorial is to quickly show teachers how to find channels on YouTube that have been created by other teachers in their content area. I have come across some Physed teachers who do not know much about YouTube let alone know “how” to create and/or subscribe to a channel. Thus, the tutorial below is to hopefully establish a foundational knowledge base for those who might need more information on YouTube.

Floor Hockey Bowling

Floor Hockey Bowling

State Standard1, 2, & 4

Equipment 12-20 bowling pins, 12 hockey sticks and pucks Grade: 3-5
Purpose of Event: shooting skills, and math skills
Time: 15-20 minutes
Organization: Divide the class into two teams.  Place the bowling pins systematically on one end of the court.  Three shooting lines are designated at the other end of the court.  Spots for the bowling pins can be marked by making small X’s on the floor with floor tape.

Floor Hockey Bowling: The shooting team gets the floor hockey sticks and pucks and line up on the 6-point line.  All pins knocked down count six points for their team.  The other team is at the other end of the gym.  After all shot have been made and points are tallied, the other team may pick up the pucks and set the pin back up.  The teams switch after points are totaled and the pins set up.  After both teams have shot from the 6-point line, they take turns shooting from the 4-point line and 2-point lines alternately.  Points are totaled and a winning team declared.

Hockey: Lead-up Games

Lead-up Games

State Standard1, 2, & 4

Equipment One hockey stick per player, One puck per game, and Cones Grade: 3-5
Purpose of Event: Stick-Handling, Shooting, Checking, Goaltending, and Teamwork
Time: 15-20 minutes
Organization: Give students a stick and have them sit down in their homes.  Explain to the students the safety precautions they need to take when playing with the sticks.  No “High Sticking”!  Tell the player we are reinforcing the hockey skills we have learned through these lead-up games.

SHOOTING SKILLS:

  1. One- on One Face-Off: (Divide the class into two equal teams and have each team stand on opposite sides of the play area, about 30 feet apart and facing each other.  Players on each team should space themselves at arm’s length.  Starting at opposite ends, have players number off.  Mark a face-off circle, 2 feet in diameter, at the middle of the play area.  To start the game, stand ready to drop the puck at the face-off circle.)  When a number is called, the two opposing players with this number face-off at the circle.  The player who gains control of the puck, either dribbles or passes it back to a teammate to earn a point for your team.  The game continues until everyone has had a turn facing off; then add the scores to determine the winner.

Variations:

  • For a large class, have more than one game going on at the same time.  Instead of dropping the puck for the face-off, have the placed on the floor between the two players, who must be outside the face-off circle.  Blow the whistle for the face-off signal.
  • Side-line Hockey: Play as for face-off game, but whoever gains control of the puck at the face-off tries to shoot it past the opposition’s side-line players, who act as goalies.
  • Pair-up Hockey: Call two or more numbers at a time, and add the rule that at least one pass must be made between the two players before attempting to score.
  • Mini-Hockey: Divide the players into groups of six.  Each group collects four cone markers and one puck.  Using the lines on the floor divide the gym into three mini-courts.)  Assign each group to a court and have them set up the goals at each end, using the cone markers.  Each group of six plays a game of three-on three in the assigned court. In your group of six, make two teams of three players.  One player of the threesome is the goalie; the other two players try to score a goal.  Change roles often or after every goal that is scored.  Remember, there is no body contact! Don’t bring your stick any higher than hip level or swing it dangerously. (Observe the play closely, watching for dangerous swinging of raising of the stick.  Take immediate action!)  On my whistle signal, immediately stop play.  Rotate to the next court and play a game of three-on-three with the new team. **You can set up these different learning activities into centers if you would like too. **
Concerns: Move safely around the gym. Being safe the hockey sticks!!!!

Hockey: Passing & Receiving Skills

Passing and Receiving Skills

State Standard1, 2, & 4

EquipmentOne hockey stick per player, One puck per pair, One ball per pair, and Several cones Grade: 3-5
Purpose of Event: Passing technique, Receiving, Control, and Partnerwork
Time: 15-20 minutes
Organization: Give students a stick and have them sit down in their homes. Explain to the students the safety precautions they need to take when playing with the sticks.  No “High Sticking”!  Have players find a partner.  Each pair gets one puck and stands ten feet apart.

Passing & Receiving Skills:

  1. Passing Technique: Keep your stick blade upright and use a smooth sweeping motion.  Try not to raise the stick above your waist in the back swing or when swinging it forward.
  2. Receiving technique: Watch the puck.  Tilt your stick blade over the puck to trap it.  Cushion the pass by allowing your stick blade to “give” at the moment of impact.
  3. Practice:
  • While standing still, pass the puck to your partner.  Concentrate on passing the puck directly into your partner’s stick.  Receivers, field the puck first, get it under control, and then pass it back to your partner.
  • While standing still, pass the puck to your partner, who is on the move; your partner stops the puck and passes it back you while you are on the move.
  • Can you and your partner both move while passing the puck back and forth?  (Make sure to “Lead” the pass.
  1. Passing Shuttle Relay: (Form teams of four to six players, each team in shuttle formation facing the other half about 30 feet apart.  Each first player of one line has a puck.  Mark a passing point for each half.)  Each player in turn, dribble the puck forward to the passing line; then pass it to the opposite file player, who fields the puck and repeats the action.
  2. Wall Passing: Taking turns with your partner hitting a puck against a wall: one partner, hit the puck; the second partner, receive the rebound and hit the puck back again.  Begin close to the wall; then gradually move farther away.

Variations: You can set up these different learning activities into centers if you would like too.

Concerns: Move safely around the gym. Being safe the hockey sticks!!!!

Green Eggs & Ham Relay

Green Eggs & Ham Relay

State Standard: 1, 2, & 4

Equipment: 4 Hula-Hoops, 1 Mat, Several small cones and beanbags (green in color) Grade: K-5
Purpose of Event: Students will participate in a relay race themed around the Dr. Seuss book Green Eggs & Ham.
Time: 20-25 minutes
Organization:  Divide the class into 4 teams (relay style) and have them line up behind the baseline at one end of the gym. Place 4 hula-hoops with 5 small green cones (Ham) and a couple beanbags (eggs) in each. These will represent the green Eggs and Ham. Place a mat at the other end of the gym. This will represent the “garbage” where the students are to place their green Eggs and Ham.

Green Eggs & Ham Relay: On the signal, one student will run with one of their green eggs and ham and try to place that item in the garbage without getting tagged by the “Sam I am.” The “Sam I am’s” are two taggers (have a green noodle) who are to trying to prevent the relay teams from getting rid of their green eggs and ham as they want them to keep and eat (as in the Dr. Seuss Story). If a student gets tagged by the “Sam I am” that student must return either the green egg or ham back to their team and then the next person goes. The game is over when one of the four teams gets rid of their green eggs and ham first. Once a team has won or the time limit is up (teacher’s choice) switch “Sam I am” taggers.

Concerns: Move safely around the gym. Make sure students are taking turns and staying their lines. Taggers should be tagging in a safe manner as well.

King-Pin Handball

PE_Wordle

King-Pin Handball

State Standard: 1, 2, 3, 4

Equipment: 10-15 Nerf balls, 10 bowling pins, jerseys, 2 floor mats Grade: 3-8
Purpose of Event: Develop throwing and aiming, Hand eye coordination, Striking stationary targets, teamwork
Time: 15-20 minutes
Description:

Divide class into 2 teams. Center line in gym divides each team’s side.  The object of the game is to be the first team to knock the opponents pins down by throwing the balls at the pins (Pins are lined up at the opposite end of the gym, 5 on each side).  Players may run anywhere in the gym.  However, if a player crosses the center line they are at risk for being tagged.  If  tagged the player goes to the jail, (mat on the other teams side of the gym).  To get out of jail, a tagged player must catch an aerial ball from one of their team mates.  This ball must be thrown from players own side. The player must catch the thrown ball with at least one foot touching the mat.  If a player in jail catches a ball, they get free backs but must return to their starting side.  The caught ball should be left as a token on the opponents side.  If you never cross the center line, you never have to “go to jail”.  Balls are NEVER thrown at people, they are only thrown at the pins.

Variations: Players do not need to cross the line to knock over a pin, but they may if they want to take a risk.  One person at a time may guard a pin, but they must remain standing.  When players are going into and out of “jail” I have them raise their hand, so others know where they are going.  While in jail, players cannot throw balls at the pins.

Concerns: Be cautious with throw, and watch where you are going!  Have knowledge of general space. Make sure students are NOT throwing the ball at one another!!!
