Container Ball

State Standard: 1, 2, 3, 5
Equipment: 4 Folding Mats, Several gator balls, & jersey’s Grade: 3-6
Purpose: Cardiovascular Fitness, Throwing Skills, Movement in General Space, Muscular Strength, & Teamwork.
Time: 15-25 Minutes

Directions:

Game Description: Container Ball incorporates many skills – running, fleeing, dodging, throwing, catching, teamwork strategies, and shooting – all in one fun massive 2-team game! The object is to get more balls into your container than the opposing team, and to empty the opposing teams’ container. The gym is divided by the center line (also needed are the end basketball hoop on each side). “Containers” for the opposite teams are built on each side using tumbling mats placed on their ends to form a rectangle (can use some sort of clamp to hold together if needed). ‘Jails’ are placed down on each side as well by laying a mat flat down on the floor.

Game play description:

  • Players are safe when they’re on their own side.
  • Players who cross over to the other team’s side can get tagged by an opponent who is holding a ball. If tagged, the player goes to the jail on that side. Opponents cannot touch or block an opponent if they are not holding a ball. A player in jail may only possess a ball that he/she has caught in the air.
  • There are 2 ways to get out of jail (these are escapes, not a free pass back to their own side): 1) Catching a ball in the air while on the mat (the ball must be thrown by a teammate from their team’s side of the gym), or 2) The teacher calling out “Jailbreak”.
  • A player has 3 options after getting out of jail and stepping off the mat: 1) Try to make it back to your side without getting tagged 2) Try to throw the ball into the container and then try to make it back to your side, or 3) Try to make a basket.

Rules:

  • You may not throw or shoot from your jail mat.
  • If a player makes a basket then his/her team gets to empty and take possession of all balls in their opponent’s container, and the player who made the basket gets a free pass back to their side.
  • Players may puppy guard the containers, but NOT the jails. Use cones or lines to mark a “no enter zone” that the defense can’t enter into.
Concerns: Be Careful when throwing a ball! Students are not allowed to throw a ball at another student!!

Knights of The Round Table

State Standard: 1, 2, 3, 5
Equipment: 3-4 mats, 10-15 gator balls, 20 pins, 6-8 scooters, & 20 polyspots (set pins on) Grade: 3-8
Purpose: Cardiovascular Fitness, Throwing Skills, Movement in General Space, Muscular Strength, & Teamwork.
Time: 15-25 Minutes

Directions:

Lay the mats across the gym to divide the play area in half. Set up ten pins on each end line (castles). Divide the class into two teams and each team begins on their own side of the play area. Assign each student one of the following roles:

  • Pages – collect  balls and bring them to their team’s Catapults (Aerobic Fitness).
  • Catapults – lay on their backs on their backs ready to perform a curl-up (throwing balls to knock down castles: Muscular Strength & Endurance).
  • Knights – sit on horses (scooters) and protect the castles (Muscular Strength, & Flexibility).

The team that knocks over all the pins (castles) first is the winner.

Concerns: Be Careful when throwing a ball! Students are not allowed to throw a ball at another student!!

Jail Ball

Jail Ball

State Standard: 1, 2, 3, 5
Equipment: 4-8 Gator Skin Balls, 4-6 Hula-Hoops, Cones, & Jersey’s.  Grade: 2-5
Purpose: Teamwork – Cooperative Learning – Throwing Skills
Time: 15-25 Minutes

Organization:

  • Set up the playing area with cones to separate the gym into two halves. Place the hula-hoops (Jails) at about 20-40 feet behind the half court line. **Distance: depends on students skill level.**

How to play:

  • The purpose of this game is to be the first team to get your teammates out of jail. Players get teammates out of jail by throwing them a ball. If the jail bird catches the ball, they must throw it back to whoever threw the ball to them. If BOTH players CATCH the thrown ball, the player is out of jail and rejoins their team. Play continues till all jailbirds are out of jail or the time limit is up. I use a 3-4 time limit.
  • Players begin by lining up on their side of the gym. I select 4 students to be the jailbirds (each students stands in a hula-hoop on other team’s side of the gym).
  • When the game begins, players attempt to throw balls over the opponents head, staying on their side of the gym to get it to their teammates who are in jail.

Rules:

  • The opponents are not allowed to block the thrown balls and CANNOT stand directly in front of the hula-hoops (jails).
  • Players may NOT cross the center-line.
  • Jailbirds may NOT step outside of their hula-hoop (jail) to try and catch a ball.
  • Students are NOT allowed to throw the ball at each other!!!
Concerns: Be Careful when throwing the balls to hit the cones. Make sure students are knocking the cones down from the mats on purpose.

Castle Smashers

PE_Wordle

Castle Smashers

State Standard: 1, 2, 3, 5
Equipment: 4 folded mats, 10-12 cones, 5-10 seven inch gator skin balls, 5-10 volleyball size gator skin balls Grade: K-3
Purpose: Teamwork – Cooperative Learning – Throwing Skills
Time: 15-25 Minutes

Organization:

  • Divide the class into two teams, place two mats on edge around the free throw line (adjust distance based on skill level of throwers) place 2-3 cones on each mat.

How to play:

  • I tell a story about two kings and how they have a moat that divides their kingdom and they send out their armies to try to defeat the other kingdom.
  • Half court line is the moat. They are catapults (their arms) and they sling boulders (gator skin balls) at the castles trying to destroy the towers.   The small balls are arrows and their arms are the cross bows, they try to hit the other team, if they get out they have exercises to get back into the game. If your castle gets smashed you become part of the other kingdom. We then restart the game.

Variations:

  • You can have Ss try and catch the “boulders,” which would allow students to put up one of their towers that was knocked over.
Concerns: Be Careful when throwing the balls to hit the cones. Make sure students are knocking the cones down from the mats on purpose.

Yardball

PE_Wordle

Yardball

State Standard: 1, 2, 3, 5
4 Batting Tees, 4 Gator-Skin balls, 4 plastic bats, & 4 mats Grade:4-7
Purpose: Throwing, Batting Skills, Running, & Cooperative Learning
Time: 15-25 Minutes
Organization: Students will sit around the middle circle while I explain the rules to the game.  Split the class up into groups of 2 to 3 as there are 8 teams in this game.

  • This game is a mini-baseball type game that can be played in the gym or outdoors to help develop baseball/softball/fielding/striking skills. Smaller teams are created in a broken-down mini game that resembles actual baseball, but with smaller groups getting more reps and practice/skill development. With a few modifications to the regular game of baseball, this game is an effective lead up or fun small style game to try out to get the heart rates up!
  • Set the gym up with four mats evenly spaced out on one end of the gym with the Batting Tees and bats at the opposite end of the mats.
  • The objective of this game is to have the batter swing and hit a ball of a tee and run to their mate (base) to score a point before they are out. Each time a batter successfully touches the mate before being out their team scores one point. This continues until the outfield players get 3 outs and then they rotate as in real baseball/softball.

Rules:

  • A batter is out when: either an outfielder catches a ball in the air, catches a ball off the wall, is tagged out, and/or forced out (outfield steps on the base with the ball before the runner touches the base).
  • A batters is NOT allowed to bunt in this game and there are NO automatic home runs.
  • A batter is automatically out if they throw their bat after they have hit the ball of the tee.
Concerns: Be Careful when tagging and when the batter are swinging the bats!

Sticks & Gladiators

PE_Wordle

Sticks & Gladiators

State Standard: 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5
Equipment: Several Foam Pins (taped w/ different colors), 6-7 mats (lying on the floor folded), several gator skin balls, and jerseys Grade: 3-5
Purpose of Event: Demonstrate throwing at a stationary target while students (gladiators) block the ball with a long-handled implement.
Time: 15-20 minutes
Set-up:

Put 6-7 folded mats side-by-side on the middle of the half court line. Next set-up several foam pins (alternating colors) on the mats spaced-out evenly. I put yellow and green tape on my pins to distinguish whose pins are whose.

Description:

Students will be throwing a ball at the other team’s colored pins. For instance, team yellow (jerseys) will be throwing their ball at the green pins; while team green (wearing jersey) will be throwing their ball at the yellow pins. They are to be standing between marked lines on the back of the gym. Those students who are the “gladiators” will be using a long-handled implement/racquet to block the ball’s being thrown at the pins. The gladiators are on their own team. I usually let the game go for 2-3 minutes. After the time limit is up; if there is more of one color pin standing up that team wins. Then we rotate “gladiators” and the game begins again. Variations: Have the “gladiators” be on one of the teams who are throwing the ball and protect their teams pins.

Rules:

Students who are throwing may NOT cross the back baseline when throwing their ball. The gladiators are NOT allowed to touch a ball with their hands! They must only use the racquet.Concerns: Move safely in general space. Being aware of where the students are swinging the racquets. This idea is from:

Snowball Fight

Description: The two teams try to be the first team to throw a snowball (yarn ball) at the other teams snowmen (bowling/foam pins) and knock them down. Students are NOT allowed to guard; however if a student catches a snowball in the air before it touches the ground they are able to set a snowman back up (on it’s poly spot). The team that knocks all the other teams snowmen down first is the winner.

Rules: Students may NOT cross the center-line (half court line) when throwing their ball.

Concerns: Move safely in general space.

Time: 15-20 minutes
Description:Students will be throwing meteors to knockout their opponents 8 power sources. Five students with a paddle may protect their power sources (power protectors). One person guards every cone & mat (5 guards per side). As soon as object is knocked down they put the paddle down and become a thrower. When all 4 balls & discs are knocked down the game is over.
Set-up:Folded mats standing on end with 4 foam disks (power sources) place on the corners. Gator Skin ball (power source) placed on a cone. Mats & cones place on the blue & white tape lines at each end of the gym.
Rules:

Students may NOT cross the centerline (half court line) when throwing their ball. Student are not allowed to throw the gator-skin balls ONLY the yarn balls.

Concerns: Move safely in general space.

Turkey Trot

State Standard: 1, 2, 3

Equipment: Bucket of Yarn Balls (or other small balls for throwing), 2 Cones, 2 Scooters, & turkey pictures. Grade: 2-5
Purpose of Event: Demonstrate throwing at a moving target.
Time: 15-20 minutes
Description:
Divide the class into 2 teams, I put each team on each side of the gym floor (turkey hunters).  Then I pick two student to be the Turkey Trot (pulling the scooter with a rope attached).Rules: The turkey hunters have to stay behind the out of bounce lines trying to throw the ammunition (yarnballs) at the turkey’s being pulled by the turkey trotters from each end of the basketball court. Once a turkey hunter throws their ball they are allowed to go inside the basketball court and retrieve more ammunition, but they MUST be behind the out of bounce lines before they can attempt another throw.  If a turkey is knocked of the cone via a yarnball being thrown by a turkey hunter the turkey trotter must sit and wait till game is over (the other turkey being knocked off) or the time limit is up and we switch turkey trotters. I play for a minute or two and then rotate jobs.

Safety: Make students are not running into one another with the scooters and make students are not throwing the yarnballs at students!! Must be trying to aim at the turkeys (cones).  Moving in General Space.

Fireman’s Challenge

20151115-194826-1oo17p0.jpg

Fireman’s Challenge

State Standard: 1, 2, & 4

Equipment: Several yarnballs, track baton, beachball, cones, & duck tape Grade: K-5
Purpose of Event: Overhand throwing at a target.
Time: 20-25 minutes
Organization: Split your class into 2 teams, and use whatever type of ball you wish (yarn balls, small gator skin balls.) The students have to throw the balls at the beach ball, trying to get to cross a line on the floor for points.

Set-up: You tie a piece of rope to the rim on one of your basketball hoops.  You then take a track baton, and tape it to a large volleyball/beach ball, then string the rope through the baton and tie to the basketball hoop on the other end of the gym. **Taken from a contest that firefighters have were they put a barrel on a cable and then see which group of firefighters can get the barrel to the other side.**

Concerns: Move safely around the gym. Make sure students are sharing the yarnballs. For older students make sure they DO NOT jump and touch the beachball. If they do, they are out or have to do an exercise to get back in the game.
