Partner Tri-Athalon

PE_Wordle

Partner Tri-Athalon

State Standard: 1, 2, 3, 4

Equipment: Scooters  Grade: (K-1 maybe) 2-5
Purpose of Event:  Cardiovascular Endurance, Simulate a Tri-Athalon, & Teamwork
Time: 15- 20 minutes
Introduction: Divide the class into two groups. One group will walk/run around the perimeter of the gym while the other group will use the scooter to simulate swimming and biking. To simulate biking, the student sits on the scooter and uses their feet to move forward or backward. For swimming, they lie on their stomach and use arms to move across the gym space. Switch every two minutes or so. I have them swim from free throw line to free throw line then bike back when they get to the line they wait and then transition to running laps while their partner transitions to swimming and then ride no bike.

Variation: You can also split the gym into halves and have 3 groups of students participating in the 3 events at a time. One half of the gym students could be “swimming” and another group could be “biking” on the other half. This is being completed as the third group is running around the outside of the gym.

Concerns: Move safely around the gym.

Aerobic Bowling

PE_Wordle

Aerobic Bowling

State Standard: 1, 2, 3, 4

Equipment: 1 gator skin ball and 1 bowling pin per group. Grade: 2-5
Purpose of Event:  Students will work on rolling the ball on the floor (bowling) while trying to knock down a pin on the other side of the gym.
Time: 15- 20 minutes
Introduction: using the lines of the volleyball court. Have students place the bowling pin on the opposite sideline from where they are standing.  On your signal, the student with the ball will underhand roll the ball trying to knock their pin down, if they knock it down they get a point (keep track of your own points).  The student then must run across the gym, set up your pin if needed, retrieve their ball and run it back to the next student in line. Students MUST hand them the ball (no throwing).  Keep alternating turns bowling and running for either a set number of points…5 or for a set length of time 3-5 minutes.  Then have the class stop and compare scores with their teammates.  Have the winners or losers, rotate to either the right or left, then play another game.

Modifications: Vary the distance between bowler and pin, size of ball (bigger/smaller), number of pins.

Concerns: Move safely around the gym. Make students know (before) how to perform each exercise described on the cards.

Candyland

PE_Wordle

Candyland

State Standard: 1, 2, 3, 4

Equipment: Colored round cones and candy land cards Grade: K-2
Purpose of Event: Cardiovascular endurance, partner play, and fun.
Time: 15- 20 minutes
Introduction: Place the candy land exercise cards under the cones.  Make sure there is the same number of exercises under each color of cones.  Scatter the cones around the playing area.  Partner up the students and have them line up on one end of the playing area.

Candy Land: Students are given a candy land card with 6 cones on it.  Each card should be different.  A typical card may have cones in this order: Purple, Green, Yellow, Red, Orange, And Blue.  Students run and look under the cones in that order.  If an exercise is posted under that cone, they must perform the exercise before going on.  After the card is completed, they return to the teacher and choose another.
Concerns: Move safely around the gym. Make students know (before) how to perform each exercise described on the cards.

Jingle Bells Parachute Play

PE_Wordle

Jingle Bells Parachute Play

State Standard: 1, 2, 3, 4

Equipment:Parachute, recording of the song “Jingle Bells” I use a projector with the song playing.  Grade: K-2
Purpose of Event: Rhythmic awareness and listening skills
Time: 15- 20 minutes
Introduction: First, play and sing the song so students can focus on hearing it.  Then have students sit around the parachute and wait for instructions before they pick it up.  Note that the activity today will require them to perform a “pattern” according to the beats of the music.

Jingle Bells Parachute Play: Have students grip the parachute.  Introduce each of the movements without the music (demonstrate each, singing or saying the words while performing the movement).  Once you have them,  put them together and add the music!

Chorus line 1: “Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way…”

Movement line 1: Lift parachute slowly up, slowly drop down, slowly lift up, slowly drop down.

Chorus line 2: “Oh what fun it is to rid in a one horse open sleigh, heh!”

Movement line 2: Fast shakes!

Verse 1: “Dashing through the snow, in a one horse open sleigh, over the fields we go, laughing all the way, HaHaHa…”

Movement verse 1: Students slide to the right.

Verse 2: “Bells on bobtails ring, making spirits bright, oh what fun it is to sing a sleighing song tonight!”

Movement verse 2: Slide to the left.

Repeat the sequence a number of times.

Concerns: Move safely around parachute and do not “pull” on parachute.

Run For Fun Games

State Standard: 1, 2, 3, 4

Equipment: Several items required/Running Space. Grade: K-2
Purpose of Event: Cardiovascular exercise
Time: 15- 20 minutes
Organization: Make sure the students understand the directions before they start running.  Maybe practice one time in the gym before going out to the track.

Fox and Hounds: One student is selected to be the fox.  The fox begins to run around the track or other designated area.  After a 3-5 second head start, the rest of the students begin to chase the fox.  When the fox is tagged by a player, all of the students slowdown and begin to walk around the track for a short period.  When all of the students are back in a large group, select another student to be the fox and continue.  Do this several times as the class completes the number of desired laps around the track.

Chase the Herd: This game is like “Fox and Hounds” in reverse!  The herd gets a head start and the chaser tries to pass as many of the herd as possible.  When the chaser appears to “run out of steam”, signal all of the students to walk and assemble at a designated point on the track.  Begin the game again with a new chaser.

Rendezvous Run: A partner running game.  Each partner runs in the opposite direction around the track.  The object of the game is to rendezvous at the starting line at exactly the same time.  Pacing and keeping an eye on your partner is very important!

Catch Me if You Can:  Equipment: Cones

Students will work in pairs.  One partner will be the runner and the other will be the walker.  The runner begins just in front of the walker.  The runner begins running laps around the perimeter (around the cones) and the walker begins walking.  The objective is for the runner to catch the walker.  When this happens they switch roles.  If a whistle sounds during the activity they must switch directions they are moving.   Variation: If a signal is given they switch roles(runner-walker) instead of switching directions.

Concerns: Move safely in general space. Tag carefully!!!

Basketball Shoot-out

PE_Wordle

Basketball Shoot Out!

State Standard: 1, 2, 3

Equipment: Rubber play ground balls, (can use basketballs, but with the little kids, and all the shooting, rubber is safer!  Plus, they bounce easier!   100+ tokens, a Frisbee, music, basketball hoops (low) Grade: K-3
Purpose of Event: Shooting Basket, Adding Score, Sportsmanship, work on HONESTY!
Time: 15-20 minutes
Description: : Have everyone get a basketball

  •  When the music starts, they can shoot at any of the 6 hoops, every time they make a basket, they come over to you and get a token out of the “treasure chest” and put the token in the Frisbee.
  •  I usually sit on a chair and hold the treasure chest, so kids will only take ONE token
  •  After 2-3 minutes, stop the music and close the lid to the chest, NO MORE TOKENS can be taken out.
  •  Have the kids come and sit around you and help them count the tokens from the Frisbee
  • Put the tokens back into the chest and start the game again.
  •  I don’t let the kids dribble or shoot while we are counting.

Work on Math skills!  Count by 2’s 5’s etc.  Also, sometimes we count by color!  Have one student pick out a chip, what ever color it is, that color is worth 2 points instead of just one!

Concerns:  If using real basketballs, be careful around the hoops!

King-Pin Handball

PE_Wordle

King-Pin Handball

State Standard: 1, 2, 3, 4

Equipment: 10-15 Nerf balls, 10 bowling pins, jerseys, 2 floor mats Grade: 3-8
Purpose of Event: Develop throwing and aiming, Hand eye coordination, Striking stationary targets, teamwork
Time: 15-20 minutes
Description:

Divide class into 2 teams. Center line in gym divides each team’s side.  The object of the game is to be the first team to knock the opponents pins down by throwing the balls at the pins (Pins are lined up at the opposite end of the gym, 5 on each side).  Players may run anywhere in the gym.  However, if a player crosses the center line they are at risk for being tagged.  If  tagged the player goes to the jail, (mat on the other teams side of the gym).  To get out of jail, a tagged player must catch an aerial ball from one of their team mates.  This ball must be thrown from players own side. The player must catch the thrown ball with at least one foot touching the mat.  If a player in jail catches a ball, they get free backs but must return to their starting side.  The caught ball should be left as a token on the opponents side.  If you never cross the center line, you never have to “go to jail”.  Balls are NEVER thrown at people, they are only thrown at the pins.

Variations: Players do not need to cross the line to knock over a pin, but they may if they want to take a risk.  One person at a time may guard a pin, but they must remain standing.  When players are going into and out of “jail” I have them raise their hand, so others know where they are going.  While in jail, players cannot throw balls at the pins.

Concerns: Be cautious with throw, and watch where you are going!  Have knowledge of general space. Make sure students are NOT throwing the ball at one another!!!

Mat Football

PE_Wordle

 Mat Football

State Standard: 1, 3

Equipment: 2 Mats, Floor Tape, several footballs, jersey’s, & Music Grade: 2-5
Purpose of Event: Work on Overhand Throwing (Football Throw) and Accuracy.
Time: 10-15 minutes
Description: Students are on two teams. Setup two mats on end. These will represent the end-zones. Students job is to overhand throw the footballs into the mats to score a touchdown. I play it for 2-3 minutes (quarters). After the time is up Students count how many footballs made it into the opponents mats (circles). For older Students 4th and 5th grade move their line back (each quarter) a line I mark on the floor that makes it harder to throw the ball in the circled mats (further away).

**After each quarter (with 4th and 5th grade students) I move the throwing line back. Longer throw harder to score.**

Concerns: Make sure students are NOT crossing the line to the opponents side and sharing the equipment with their teammates.
This idea is from: I have seen a version of this from several teachers, but I implemented the quarter options.
